The GLBTA Leadership Year is an exciting new initiative offering an integrated, year-long learning experience for any and all interested undergraduate students at the University of Minnesota - running through GLBT 3610 in fall semester, GLBT 3301 in spring semester, and culminating in a May term course where students travel to Chicago, New York and Washington, D.C. for intensive study and dialogue with national leaders of the GLBTA rights movement.
The GLBTA Leadership Year offers students an opportunity to learn first-hand about gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and ally identities, histories and politics - through an exciting combination of coursework, service learning, and study away.
Students will be exposed to both practical and theoretical understandings of leadership, community, and social movements, by studying, working, and traveling together as a community throughout the entire academic year.
Students participating in the GLBTA Leadership Year can count their coursework toward the GLBT Studies Minor, the Leadership Minor, and/or a GLBTA Leadership Certificate.

GLBT 3610: Intro to GLBTA Community & University Resources (3 credits)
Learn about and experience the multifaceted gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and ally communities on the University of Minnesota campus and in the larger Twin Cities. This course contains a service-learning component.

Spring Semester 2010
GLBT 3301/SW 3301: GLBT Social Movements (3 credits)
This course utilizes classroom and community service-learning to examine the development of GLBTA social movements.
May Term 2010
GLBT 3610: Summer Leadership Institute (3 credits)
The GLBTA Leadership Year concludes with a
May term study away opportunity, introducing students to GLBTA activism and organizing on a national level via intensive study and dialogue with GLBTA leaders in Chicago, New York and Washington, D.C.

Q: Who can take the courses and be involved in the Leadership Year? Are there prerequisities?
A: No, there are no prerequisites for the GLBTA Leadership Year. It is open to any and all interested undergraduate students at the University of Minnesota.
Q: Can graduate students take part in the GLBTA Leadership Year?
A: There is the possibility of graduate student involvement through Directed Study. If you are an interested graduate student, contact Anne Phibbs at 612-625-8519 or phib0001@umn.edu.
Q: Can I be involved in the GLBTA Leadership Year if I have already taken GLBT 3301/SW 3301?
A: Yes, students who have already taken GLBT 3301/SW 3301 can still be involved. Contact Anne Phibbs at 612-625-8519 or phib0001@umn.edu if you are in this situation.
Q: Do these credits count for any minors or certificates?
A: Yes, these courses may be used toward the GLBT Studies Minor and/or the Leadership Minor. Students should check with these programs directly if they are interested in using credits in this way.
All students finishing the three courses that comprise the GLBTA Leadership Year may earn a GLBTA Leadership Certificate, jointly issued through the GLBTA Programs Office and the Leadership Education and Development - Undergraduate Programs (LEAD-UP) Office.
